Firstly from faecal (Poo) - oral (mouth) contamination is the most common cause or worm infections in parrots. I.e. the birds  eats its own poo when eating seeds of food of the floor!  This happens if seeds or food fall onto the droppings, or food  comes into contact with the droppings.  This food contamination is also common  unhygienic. Poo or droppings that build up and collect and then contaminate the feet and get spread around the cage.

Secondly from eating insects and other arthropods that have worm eggs in side them.  This is very common in insect eating  birds. Chickens often get worms from eating insects and other arthropods .

Thirdly some birds like foraging and eating off the ground like the polytelis species, the princess parrot.  Ground foraging birds are much more likely to get worms

Fourthly the surface of the cage floor plays a role.  Budgies kept in cages with grit on the floor of the cage are about 1000X more likely to have worms, than those that do not have grit as a cage floor surface .
