How your bird's first vet visit unfolds: step by step
You and your bird are greeted by the bird vet, who will discuss the reason for the visit. This may be a health check, new bird check, behaviour concern, feather issue, breathing problem, weight loss, injury, egg-laying concern, or a bird that just does not seem right.
The bird vet will ask about your bird's diet, housing, environment, husbandry, bathing, sleep, recent changes, other pets, how long the problem has been present, and what you have noticed at home.
Your bird is gently restrained in a towel or tea towel and examined in front of you. The vet may assess body condition, feathers, beak, eyes, nostrils, mouth, breathing, abdomen, vent, legs, feet and overall strength.
Your bird is accurately weighed, as even small changes in body weight are important in avian medicine. Your bird may then rest in a heated incubator while the vet prepares to discuss findings with you.
