Bird-vet helping the community
Dr Phil is a Senior Academic Fellow at Melbourne University and the Melbourne Bird Vet regularly have veterinary students, both from Australia and overseas, doing rotations at our clinic, particularly to learn about veterinary care for birds.
Almost all avian veterinarians teach! There are just too few qualified Bird Veterinarians.
Some Bird vets teach in academia at the veterinary Science Faculty, or at higher education facilities like tafes or informally mentoring Veterinary students the bird veterinary clinic.
Being a qualified Bird vet, or an expert avian vet is a passion. And to become a specialist Bird vet takes a lot of time an effort for little financial reward initially.
Most of the teaching is to educate the many bird owners we see, and to advocate for their birds, the best bird vet has to offer. The birds vets try and teach about ideal living environments, discuss bird Behaviour.
