Melbourne Chicken Rescue takes in sick, unwanted, injured and liberated chickens. We treat and rehabilitate them, give them care, love, respect, compassion and treat them with dignity. Those who make a full recovery, are adopted out into loving homes where the chickens live as companions, with nothing more than love and joy expected from them.
The chicken Vets , with MCR also inform and educate the public of the unnecessary “torture” that chickens endure at the hands of the human race.
Chickens are inquisitive, intelligent, social creatures, that are forced to live lives of misery for our protein. Billions of chickens worldwide endure a life of pain, discomfort, madness, sorrow, sickness, misery and torture.
The chicken vets issue is alsio that most never walk on grass and never see the sun or sky.

Each year in Australia, millions of hens are condemned to a short and miserable existence in factory farms, all for the sake of cheap eggs. These hens, who are social, inquisitive and affectionate, have no quality of life in tiny battery cages that they share with up to four other hens. After years of confinement, boredom and frustration, their egg production begins to reduce, and the vast majority are sent to be slaughtered. Their journey to the slaughterhouse is often the first time they have ever seen the sun, or breathed fresh air.
A lucky few of these 'spent' hens are spared from slaughter by groups and individuals who believe that these animals deserve to know how good a real 'life' can be — one that bears no semblance to the misery of a factory farm. Hen adoption programs are emerging across some states in Australia, giving caring people the opportunity to share the experiences of rescued hens as they learn to adjust to a life of freedom and kindness.
Opening your heart and home to an ex-battery hen will not only reward you with the joy of seeing these long-abused animals 'come out of their shells' and learn to experience a new and wonderful world, but it will mean giving the most important gift there is to an animal in need: life.

Tasmania has become the first Australian state to commit to the complete phase out of battery cages. Help make this a reality for ALL chickens in Australia by writing to both the Federal and your State Minister for Agriculture calling for an end to the cruel battery cage. If you need some help please use the sample letter below.
Dear Minister of Agriculture
To be able to stretch your wings, lay your eggs in private, dust bathe, scratch about in the soil, shelter from those who intimidate you and choose your own companions, are all things that are very important to a chicken. With this in mind I am greatly disturbed to learn that right now for around 12 million laying hens in Australia these basic fundamentals of life are denied.
You have the power to change this by ending the battery cage system of egg production in Australia. The Code of Accepted Farming Practice for the Welfare of Poultry is overdue for review. I most strongly urge you to call a review and see that battery cages are consigned to the dustbin of history where they should have gone long ago. Economics is no excuse for animal cruelty and suffering. Australia is a lucky country, it should be so for its animals as well. I would greatly appreciate your response.
